BedrockConnect is the primary way Minecraft Bedrock players can access 3rd party Minecraft servers on consoles such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. It is a workaround method that allows these players to join servers that the rest of the Minecraft Bedrock community is able to play out of the box.
BedrockConnect works by joining a lightweight Minecraft server that displays a server menu/list that allows you to connect to Minecraft Bedrock-compatible servers of your choosing. However, this isn't enough to allow console players to connect. An additional component called MCXboxBroadcast is used to broadcast the server via Xbox Network to allow console players easy access to the server list. All a user needs to do is add an Xbox Live account to their friends list and wait a few minutes. Once completed, the user can join the account and be redirected to the server list, from which they can connect to a Minecraft Bedrock server of their choosing.
BedrockConnect relies on two different pieces of software. BedrockConnect and MCXbox Broadcast. Both are equally important and require a lot of maintenance by their developers to keep running. If you can, donating to these projects and developers is the best way to show your support. Both accept sponsorships on GitHub as well as other platforms.

Cove Wolf (me) currently hosts a free public BedrockConnect instance for the public. Over 500k users have used my instance to connect to their favorite Minecraft servers. I don't take monetary donations and encourage you to contribute elsewhere, but a subscription to my YouTube channel goes a long way in supporting this project. Thank you!
